Thread: CJ7 Re-build V2

Dan. Do you drive your Jeep all winter. I wasn’t planning to put the heating system back in mine. I might change my mind.

Sure do! Daily driver. Life's to short to leave it parked waiting for a few good weeks of summer.
If you put the heat in and plan for fun in the snow then do yourself a favour and drill out the rivets, crack it open (upper and lower), refinish all of the dampers and seals, dry lube the cables after soaking them for days.
I pulled the damper shafts from the dampers and replaced them with new stainless rods (after grinding a flat surface along thier length to prevent rotation).
Be really careful with the damper mechanism (if you break it you are looking for a whole new heater box.)
I formed a tin backer for the mechanism and through bolted and lock nutted it in place to reduce strain on the aged plastic housing.
Glazer tape or putty (dum dum) the seams on reassembly.
I used small nut and bolts with tiny lock washers in place of the drilled out rivets.
    Replace the coil.
Add a coolant circulator (tee in to the hot bypass and return with a tee into the lower heater return line.) Do not put it in-line!
Then do the Bronco motor upgrade (so worth the effort!).
You will thank me when you start on a key turn at -20, kick down in 3 minutes or less, and are Jeeping in your T-shirt and shorts at -20!

My mechanism was missing and I couldn't find one come rebuild time so I cobbled this one together to do the job until I find a replacement.

Nice looking throttle assembly. That is some very good advice on the heater box. Winter driving in a CJ5 can be a lot of fun. with tyres that work well in the snow and on ice it is not as stressful as running rock hard mud tyres.

What a great late November day! Glad I went with a soft top! The heater upgrade makes it really comfortable on days like today. It's 10 degrees and the heater is on low just keeping my feet toasty. Top down in November - who would have guessed? The grabbers have been good down to -20 so far. Studded the outter rows only. Inner tread (middle) has no studs. No noise in the summer and that little extra bite when you break or corner. Perfect.

    And then it happened........

Guy left hand turns right into me.
    Put me on two wheels.
Thought I was going over but I managed to steer into it and drop on all fours.

So much for my wheels though.
Brand new tire is done too.
Blew the hub cove into a bag of dimes.

Limped it home but it was dragging it's butt. Maybe a bent axle tube, or axle, or brake. Won't know until it's all on the floor.

I'll never find a matching wheel.

    Sad, sad, day.

Smacked my head hard enough on the door glass that won't close right now.

Bashed my knee into the dash.

Little bent, little sore, guess we'll see what happens in a few days.

Missed the Oilers game as a result!
